Calcitriol is a synthetic form of Vitamin D3 that is used to treat calcium shortage associated with hypoparathyroidism (decreased activity of the parathyroid glands) and metabolic bone disorders in persons with chronic kidney failure. It enhances vitamin D levels, which elevates calcium levels in the blood. This improves calcium absorption from the stomach.
