L-methylfolate is used to treat low blood cell folate levels in some people through diet. It has been demonstrated that folic acid lowers the risk of birth abnormalities and neural tube defects (NTDs). Many individuals struggle to properly convert folic acid into L-methylfolate. This restricted absorption reduces the amount of L-methylfolate that is accessible to the body, making it more difficult for the body to develop and maintain appropriate folic acid stores and dramatically raising the risk of birth abnormalities.
